What are Flame Retardant Gloves?
Welding gloves are personal protective equipment (PPE) designed for welders and cutters. They protect the hands, wrists and usually forearms from various hazards during welding and thermal processing operations.
They generally provide the following protections:
- Resist heat and burns caused by sparks, splashes, molten metal and high-temperature workpieces
- Block ultraviolet and infrared radiation generated by welding arcs
- Prevent cuts, abrasions and puncture injuries from sharp metal edges
- Protect against minor electrical hazards in certain scenarios
(Note: Standard welding gloves cannot replace rated insulating gloves)
Glove Advantages
Excellent Flame Retardancy
The adopted fabric is non-combustible. Aramid, modacrylic and FR-treated cotton materials carbonize and self-extinguish within 1-2 seconds once the flame source is removed, with no melting or dripping occurring during the whole process.
Low Thermal Conductivity
The unique air gaps formed by knitted loops act as an effective thermal barrier. This structure significantly slows down heat transfer to the skin compared with ordinary plain cotton gloves, providing better heat insulation.
Lightweight & Flexible
Crafted with 10-gauge aramid knitting and an inner cotton yarn layer, the gloves ensure excellent finger flexibility. Workers can freely operate welding torches, turn hot valve wheels and complete delicate operational movements without restraint.
Superior High-temperature Strength
Aramid fiber retains most of its tensile strength at 300°C. In contrast, ordinary polyester and nylon fibers begin to soften at around 250°C and may adhere to the skin under high-temperature conditions.
Reliable Cut Resistance
The aramid knitted structure independently achieves EN 388 Cut Level 2 performance. It effectively protects hands from sharp injuries when handling steel sheets, wire ropes and metal scraps.
Durable & Wash-resistant Performance
Aramid knitted gloves feature permanent flame retardancy without relying on chemical finishing, and its protective performance will not fail after repeated washing. For FR-treated cotton gloves, a stable level of basic protection can still be maintained after multiple washes.
Anti-slip Secure Grip
The palm adopts split cowhide and suede surface treatment. It provides a stable and firm grip on welding torches, pliers and high-temperature workpieces, even in sweaty working conditions, effectively preventing slipping risks.
How Flame Retardant Gloves Protect Your Safety
Flame and fire protection
When the glove meets open flame or welding sparks, the aramid fibre carbonises and forms a char layer on the surface. The char layer slows down the heat and stops the flame from going into the inner lining.
Self-extinguishing
Once the ignition source is removed the fabric stops burning in 1-2 seconds. There is no afterglow and no melt drip, so the glove will not catch fire again on site.
Contact heat insulation
Thick leather and the multi layer lining delay the heat transfer to the skin. Aramid knit styles work at 350°C continuously and stand 500°C for a short time.
Molten metal splash
Split leather and aluminized back resist small splash of molten metal, which is the main hazard in welding, foundry and die casting work. Notice: a large amount of molten metal can still go through the glove, extra protection is needed for high risk jobs.
Cut and puncture protection
The aramid knit also works as a cut resistant layer, and the leather palm stops sharp steel sheet, welding wire ends and metal burrs.
Radiant heat reflection
The aluminized outer layer reflects most of the radiant heat before it reaches the hand, this matters when the worker stands close to a furnace or a hot ingot.
Extended cuff
36cm to 42cm cuffs cover the wrist and the forearm, so sparks and hot slag cannot fall inside the glove.
The difference between Flame Retardant Gloves and standard protective gloves
Different core protection functions
Flame Retardant Gloves: Designed to resist burning and slow heat transfer. The fabric does not support combustion, protecting hands from open flames, welding sparks, contact heat, and molten metal splashes.
General Safety Gloves: Provide basic protection against abrasion, cuts, slips, and oil. Cotton, polyester, and nylon can burn or melt onto the skin, potentially making burns worse.
Different material requirements
Flame retardant gloves: Made of aramid, FR treated cotton, modacrylic, split cowhide, aluminized fabric or felt lining. Materials have to pass the heat and flame test of EN 407 or NFPA 2112, and the afterflame time is limited.
General safety gloves: Made of normal cotton yarn, polyester, nylon or nitrile coating. No flame test is required.
Different application scenarios
Flame retardant gloves: Welding, foundry, steel mill, glass plant, heat treatment workshop, furnace and boiler maintenance, fire fighting and emergency rescue.
General safety gloves: Material handling, warehouse picking, packing, gardening and light assembly, where there is no open flame and no hot surface.
Different wear-out judgment rules
Flame retardant gloves: When the surface is burnt through, the leather turns hard and cracks, or the aramid layer becomes thin and exposed, the glove must be replaced. A burnt glove loses the thermal protection even if it still looks usable.
General safety gloves: Can continue to be used with small wear and a few small holes.
Application
Burns from flame, sparks and hot slag
Sparks from stick, MIG and TIG welding land on the back of hand and the cuff, normal cotton gloves start to burn in a few seconds.
Contact heat and hot workpieces
Cut steel plate, welded pipe and hot slag keep 300°C to 800°C after welding, hands get burned when the worker moves or holds the workpiece.
Cuts and punctures
Sharp steel plate edges, welding wire ends, burrs and grinding chips cut the palm during fitting and grinding work.
Radiant heat and UV light
Long time arc exposure burns the wrist and the forearm when the cuff is too short.
- Thick split cowhide palm, blocks welding sparks and hot slag, no burn through on short time contact
- Double layer cowhide patch on palm and thumb web, service life is about two times longer than a single layer glove
- Flame retardant felt lining, keeps the hand cool after long time welding and absorbs sweat
- Flame retardant red sewing thread, does not melt or break when sparks hit the seam
- 42cm extra long cuff covers the whole forearm, hot slag cannot fall inside
- Hook and loop strap at the cuff, seals the gap and fits different wrist sizes
- Notice: For heavy slag and long time contact above 400°C, wear leather sleeves and an apron at the same time.

Foundry, steel mill and glass plant

Molten metal splash
Hot castings, moulds and raw hot material splash during transfer, the splash sticks on the cloth and burns through.
Radiant heat from furnace and kiln
Radiant heat from the furnace door and the hot ingot dries the skin fast, the worker feels the pain before touching anything.
Hot workpieces and heat treatment parts
Freshly heated metal parts have to be sorted and unloaded while they are still 300°C or higher.
Sharp scrap and hot pipe
Metal burrs, casting flash and hot pipe ends cut and burn the hand at the same time.
- Aluminized outer layer reflects most of the radiant heat, suitable for work close to a furnace or a hot ingot
- Multi layer thermal lining slows down the heat going to the skin, suitable for long shifts
- 36cm extended forearm coverage, protects the wrist and the lower arm from heat splash
- Two styles available: full aluminized for heavy radiant heat, cowhide reinforced palm for gripping rough hot workpieces
- Aramid knit version with split cowhide palm, 350°C continuous and 500°C instant, EN 388 cut level 2
- Ribbed elastic cuff and reinforced stitching at fingertips and palm, no early cracking under heavy use
- Notice: Molten metal can still go through the glove in a big splash, please use leather sleeves and a heat resistant apron together.

Open flame and flash fire
Fire fighting, night time traffic rescue and oil and gas site work may meet open flame and flash fire, normal work gloves catch fire and melt on the skin.
Steam and hot water pipe
Hot valves, steam pipes and boiler surfaces burn the hand during inspection and maintenance work.
Smoke and low visibility
In smoke filled and dim places the crew cannot see where the hand is, another person may step on it or cut it.
Sharp wreckage and debris
Broken glass, twisted metal sheet and wreckage cut the palm during rescue work.
- Aramid knit with reflective strips on the cuff, the hand is easy to find in smoke and dim light
- Split cowhide flame retardant shell with heat insulated cotton lining, blocks heat from flame and hot surface
- Reinforced palm and fingertip patches, better abrasion and cut resistance for heavy rescue work
- Elastic rib cuff plus adjustable strap, keeps sparks, hot ash and debris out of the glove
- Five finger and split three finger styles available, for fire brigades, high temperature factories and rescue teams
- Good flexibility, the crew can still grip a fire hose and operate tools
- Notice: For live line work please use our insulating gloves, flame retardant gloves are not electrical insulating gloves.

FAQ
Q1: What standards do your flame retardant gloves meet?
A:The aramid knit styles are tested to EN 407 and EN 388. The leather welding gloves follow EN 388 and EN 12477. NFPA 2112 test can be arranged for the US market, please tell us when you send the inquiry.
Q2: Will the glove keep burning after I take it out of the flame?
A:No. Aramid and FR treated fabric self-extinguish in 1-2 seconds after the flame source is removed, and they char without melting and dripping.
Q3: What is the maximum working temperature?
A:It depends on the style. The aramid knit gloves with cowhide palm work at 350°C continuously and stand 500°C for a short time. Aluminized styles are used for strong radiant heat, please keep the contact time short.
Q4: Can I use these gloves for arc flash protection?
A: Knitted flame retardant gloves are not arc rated by themselves. For live line work please use our insulating gloves, or ask our sales team for a leather protector glove used over the rubber insulating glove.
Q5: Do you supply flame retardant gloves with cut resistance?
A: Yes. The aramid knit gives EN 388 cut level 2 by itself. If you need level C to F, we can use a higher weight aramid yarn or add a glass fibre core yarn, MOQ will be a bit higher.
Q6: How many washes can the gloves last?
A: Aramid knit styles do not depend on a chemical finish, so the flame resistance is permanent. FR treated cotton keeps a stable level for about 20 to 30 washes in cold water, no bleach and no softener.
Q7: Are the gloves stiff after heavy use?
A:Split cowhide turns a bit stiff after long time use or after it gets wet. We recommend the suede finish and the cotton lining for jobs that need more finger movement, the aramid knit styles stay soft.
Q8: Can you print our logo on the glove?
A: Yes, OEM is supported. Logo can be printed on the cuff or woven on the wrist band, and the leather can be stamped. MOQ for printed logo is 1000 pairs per style per size.
Q9: What sizes are available?
A: Normally 9, 10 and 11 for the European market, 8 to 11 for the US market, S/M/XL for the welding styles. A size 10 sample can be sent for fitting before the bulk order.
Q10: How do you pack the gloves?
A: Normally 1 pair per polybag or 12 pairs per polybag, 120 pairs per carton, or packed with your own barcode and carton mark. Retail packing with a header card is also available.
Q11: What is the MOQ and the lead time?
A: MOQ is 1000 pairs per size for the normal styles, 3000 pairs for customized leather work. Lead time is about 25 to 35 days after the sample is confirmed.
Q12: Do you offer free samples?
A: Yes, one sample pair is free for the standard styles, the buyer only pays the express cost.
